No cat likes to be attacked - let alone by their children! Viz wouldn't have it. No. With a hefty kick of his metallic hind legs, the cybercat freed himself from Bo's grip. "What the hell are you thinking?", he spat, the fur on his back bristling, his tail now double the size. "I go wherever I want in this town! You two aren't going to stop me!" But although he acted tough, Viz was deeply hurt. These were his children, and they despised him. He couldn't take it. He couldn't look them in the eyes anymore. So, he turned around, ready to leave.
But Nex wasn't having any of it. Enraged, he crouched, ready to jump. And he did. His claws tore through the ginger fur, and to his surprise, it was warm. No, not the fur... the blood. His father bled the same red blood that Nex had running through his veins. However, before he could follow that thought, Viz threw himself on the ground, shaking off his son. The jolt was so powerful that Nex flew a few meters in the other direction. Curse his broken tail! He hadn't landed on his feet ever since he was a kitten, and he wouldn't succeed now either. Then, a sudden pain in his back. Viz had thrown him right against one of the left over barrels that were scattered across the warehouse. It fell over, along with the yelping cat. Nex was dazed from the hit. He heard Bo shout while he slowly crawled back to his feet and - ew! - what was that on his tail? Turning around, Nex saw it was soaked with an oily substance. It smelled disgusting. Bo had reached him now. "What are you doing?! Run!" Run? Why? Nex's ears twitched when he heard a sizzling noise behind him. It was a cable box, its shallow cover smashed from where the barrel had hit it. And from one of the cables, sparks of electricity sprayed into the air. Oh, that's why, he thought. Nex had never run so fast in his life. Had he waited another second, he would have burst into flames. A loud whoosh rang out, and mere seconds after, the siblings were surrounded by flames. "What do we do?", Bo asked, unconcealed panic in her voice. Nex looked around, trying to orientate himself. Viz was nowhere to be seen. He was long gone. "We need to find an exit! Fast!" The two cats made a bolt for the gate through which they had entered, only to find it was already blocked off by fire. And on top of everything, the siblings heard a loud crack above their heads. The hungry flames were too much for the frail framework of the warehouse. Before they could react, a large chunk of the ceiling broke off, with it a heavy metal pipe, and flew right towards them. In sheer fear, Nex dashed away, escaping the falling debris by mere inches... an agonizing scream behind him told him that his sister did not.
"Bo!" She was stuck under the pipe, her legs squashed by its weight. She cried out in pain. "Help me! Get me out of here!"
But the pipe was too heavy. No matter how hard Nex pushed, it didn't move a bit. "Come on!", she shouted. "Try again!" The ginger looked around himself. His view was engulfed in flames. The deadly heat came crawling closer with every passing second. "Don't just stand there! Push!", his sister groaned. But Nex's thoughts were clouded by fear. He had to get out of here! Quick! He didn't want to die! "Nex!"
And he ran. With wide eyes, unable to speak, Nex ran. He heard his sister's screams behind him, but he didn't dare to look. Soon, the screams were drowned out by the flickering roar of the fire. An exit! He had to find one! Teardrops ran down his cheeks as he frantically searched for a door, a hole in the wall - anything! With his vision blurred by tears, and orange light filling every corner of the warehouse, it seemed like an impossible task. "What should we do?!", Nex whined. Not one bit was left of the proud gang leader. Then, it dawned on him. No one would answer. He was alone. He left his own sister for dead! What if he could have saved her? For a moment, Nex considered running back. But the flames had already blocked that path. He coughed. The smoke was filling his lungs. Not much longer now, and he would be done for.
That's when Nex looked up. There... all the way up at the ceiling... the stars in the deep black sky shone down on Nex. There it was. An exit. But how on earth should Nex get up there? A pile of debris, leading up to the framework, and a balk reaching towards the hole. That was the answer. It was risky for sure - but it was his only chance. Nex stumbled forward, dodging falling bricks and hungry flames. He heaved himself on top of the pile, climbing higher and higher until he had left most of the chaos behind him. Up here, the smoke was even worse. He coughed again. He had to keep going. There it was, the part he had feared the most. Don't leave me hanging now, stupid tail! Nex took a few careful steps on the balk. His paws were trembling. One false step and he would fall to his doom. Another step. And another. He tried his best to keep his balance, but he knew his tail would do more harm than good if he tried to shift his weight with it. He let it hang limply, right beneath the balk... and that was his mistake. A sudden pain like he had never felt before came rushing up his spine. He screamed in agony. His tail was aflame! The oily substance that he had managed to keep away from the fire so far was enough to make it light up within the blink of an eye. He had to get out! Now! In one last desperate attempt to escape his horrible fate, Nex jumped. With his claws stretched out and his face creased into a scream, he reached for the edge of the ceiling. Then, he fell. As if in slow motion, his paws missed, and he fell headfirst into the burning havoc that was raging beneath him. Nex's thoughts went wild. He was going to die! Right here, right now. What a fitting end for a bastard like him. It was his own fault, all of this! And he had pulled Bo into it.
Just because he was too stupid to let his father go. All because of his father. Goodbye, he thought. Then, everything went black.

With a loud gasp, Nex opened his eyes. Exit! He had to find an exit! No, wait. This was wrong. Where was the fire? It must have been a dream, he thought. A terrible dream. "Bo?" No answer. Nex's head felt like it had exploded. He rubbed his temple. It felt... unusually smooth. What the hell was going on?! He looked around himself. This was not his den! It was... no! No way! Nex froze. The warehouse. But then... everything was real. No dream, no nightmare. Reality. But he had fallen to his death, had he not? How was he still alive? The rapid blinking of blue and red lights interrupted his thoughts. It was coming from outside. Flustered voices were rumbling on the street - human voices. Ugh, Nex couldn't stand them. They were so loud, and they brought chaos wherever they went. He had to get out. Letting his view wander across his surroundings, he noticed... what was that? Everything seemed so... flat. Oh. Oh no. Nex realized now that his right eye was blind. Starting to panic again, he rushed to make his way through the front gate, which now had quite a few holes in it.

The ginger had to close his eyes when the flashing lights blinded what was left of his sight. He staggered away from the malicious warehouse and the group of humans that had formed in front of it. He hoped no one would see him. He had to look pathetic, with his burned fur and broken tail. Hold up... his tail? When Nex turned around to see the result of the flames, he almost fell over. His tail was gone. The little stump that was left of it was burned to a crisp. Oh... shit. Shit! That gave him the push he needed. He ran. He ran away from the scene, as far into the back alleys as he could. His entire body hurt, but there was nothing he could do about it. He kept running.

A sudden flash before his eyes made him come to an abrupt halt. It was gone as quickly as it came. Nex looked around himself, but there was nothing there. Nothing that could have given off that flash of colors.

Another flash. This time it stayed longer. Long enough for Nex to notice it didn't come from his working eye... it came from his blind one. Not daring to move an inch, Nex now trembled. Fear and confusion crossed his mind. Then, a sudden pain in his rump.

He turned his head. There, where his tail used to sit, was now a gleaming chunk of metal. Its stinking, alien scent filled his nose. Nex stared in disbelief as the chunk grew, until another section lunged out from inside it. Then another. And another. The sound of metal clanging on metal filled the air. Finally, a rounded tip emerged, and with a last ching, it lit up.

As the ginger stared with wide eyes at what had just happened, the next shock came along. With another flash of colors, Nex's right eye started up. He recoiled. He could see again! But something was different. The colors all seemed... wrong. While trying to figure out what it was, Nex didn't notice his new tail moving behind him, behaving just like a normal tail would.

Nex was so distracted by his vision and the shock of what was happening to him, he didn't realize how the shaking of his limbs became less and less, until it was gone completely. All the exhaustion from inhaling the smoke-filled air, from screaming and running, was soon gone. Until...

Nex jolted. He knew what was wrong with his vision. His right eye no longer saw the world around him how it really was - it saw heat. The cold night around him was deep blue, almost how it would look normally. But when he looked down on himself, he had a glowing warm color. He raised a paw in front of his eyes. When he closed his right eye, the paw looked normal. When he opened it, the confusing realm of blue and red overtook his field of vision. Sheer panic overcame Nex. This couldn't be happening. This could not be happening! But, of course, it was exactly what it looked like. He was a cybercat. A robot. An abomination.
So the rumors on the streets were true then. Cybercats were reborn when they died... wait... If I'm a cybercat... what about Bo? Did she survive? A cold shiver ran down Nex's spine. He had left her for dead. He could only imagine how mad his sister would be if she came back from her fiery grave, seeking for her treacherous brother. He couldn't confront her like this. He was too scared. What a coward he was. Bo had always been there for him, no matter what. And the second she was in danger, Nex turned on his heel and ran. Tears filled his eyes anew as he once again realized what he had done. If she was dead, it was his fault for not helping her. If she was still alive, it was his fault that she had become a machine like him. Nex's body trembled even more now. If he had known he wouldn't die, he could have stayed with her. I could have saved her! And what would the Revolt think if it could see him now? Their leader, the one who taught them to despise the artificial world they lived in, was a fraud. He couldn't go back to them now. Never. They would chase him off like the monster he was. With his ears lowered, and his glowing tail hanging limply to the ground, Nex continued his way through the streets of Winter City - alone, his destination unknown.
